secretary, leon panetta, confirming that the united states has deployed american troops to help jordan with a civil war across its northern border in syria. this marks the strongest u.s. military response yet to syria's 19 month long civil war. a u.s. defense official saying more than 100 military planners and other troops now operating from a joint u.s. jordanian military center, north of the capital city of amman. that's less than 35 miles from jordan's border with syria. this follows several days of cross border attacks between syria and turkey. a troubling sign that the syrian civil war could explode into a wider conflict. today secretary panetta saying the u.s. is helping jordan deal with tens of thousands of refugees out of syria and getting ready for any potential syrian escalation. >> that's the reason we have our -- a group of our force there is working to help them build a headquarters there and to insure that we make the relationship between the united states and jordan a strong one so that we can deal with all of the possible consequences of what's happening in syria. >> ac

and that is the sequester. we know that mr. panetta, the secretary of defense, said that it would be a disaster, as it would be. and i would refer you to the chapter. where did that originate? where did that idea come from? it turns out that it can from the white house. it turns out he had a meeting with senator reid and congresswoman pelosi and suggested this. and initially and apparently they were not keen on the idea. now how much does the defense amount to percentage wise in terms of the problem that we as a nation face? if you talk about giving budgetary spending every year, discretionary spending, it is 50%. if you talk about the problem that includes entitlements, it is 13%. if you want to look at the $55 billion coming out of the sequestered, that works out to about 1.4% of our overall problem. but better than 10% of the defense budget. are you going to tell me that the solution to the national financial problem is cutting defense? and by the way, do you honestly think that the mothers in iran, that the north koreans, but the radical muslims including al qaeda which have been defeated but now it tur

that american troops are on the border in case they are needed. pentagon chief leon panetta isn't ruling anything out, saying the 150 u.s. special operations troops flew to jordan to build a headquarters and begin contingent planning to keep weapons of mass destruction from being used. in the meantime, a plane carrying suspected missile parts was diverted to turkey last night, raising tensions between the two neighbors. >>> back here at home, good news for the housing market. u.s. foreclosure filings fell 12% from august to september. filings are now at a five-year low and are 15% lower than the same time last year. last month's report also marks the second consecutive monthly decline. >>> developing this morning, a new twist in that nationwide meningitis outbreak. it turns out the massachusetts- based pharmacy that made the tainted steroid linked to the outbreak was sued back in 2004 over allegations they made a tainted shot that later killed an elderly man. the pharmacy eventually settled that lawsuit. so far 12 deaths have been connected to the fungal infection. >>> it is now 8:30
